Devoción al Sagrado Corazón de JesúsDevotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Devotion to the Sacred Heart is the adoration of the love of Jesus Christ, represented in his Heart pierced upon the cross. It is not the veneration of an organ, but the contemplation, under the sign of the Heart, of the infinite love with which God gives himself to mankind.
Its foundation is in Scripture. From the opened side of Christ flowed blood and water (Jn 19:34), a sign of the sacraments and of the newborn Church. In that open Heart, Christian tradition has always recognized the fountain of divine mercy.
Through the centuries the Church has guarded and taught this devotion: Saint John Eudes gave it its liturgical form, Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque received and spread it from Paray-le-Monial, and the Popes confirmed it in great documents, from Pius XII's Haurietis Aquas to Pope Francis's encyclical Dilexit Nos (2024).
To live this devotion is to answer love with love: to consecrate oneself to the Heart of Jesus, to make reparation for indifference to that love, and to welcome it into one's own life, in a very special way in the Eucharist.

Devotion to the Sacred Heart did not arise from a single isolated moment. God prepared its cradle over several generations, through a holy friendship and a religious order born of it.

A friendship that gave rise to an order
Jane Frances Frémyot, Baroness de Chantal, was widowed at twenty-eight, with young children. In her grief, she begged God for a good spiritual director. In 1604, in Dijon, she heard the Lenten preaching of Saint Francis de Sales, Bishop of Geneva. He agreed to become her spiritual director and, in time, one of the greatest spiritual friends of her life. Their correspondence is today one of the treasures of spiritual direction in the history of the Church.

The Order of the Visitation
From that friendship an order was born that welcomed those whom the more austere communities turned away: widows, older women, women of frail health. It was centered not on extreme penance but on gentleness and humility of heart. On 6 June 1610, in Annecy, Jane and Francis founded the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary. Saint Francis gave it as its coat of arms a heart pierced by two arrows, encircled by thorns and surmounted by a cross, more than half a century before the apparitions.

From the Visitation to Paray-le-Monial
The order grew rapidly: by the death of Francis in 1622 it numbered thirteen monasteries, and dozens more were founded afterward throughout France. One of them was in the small town of Paray-le-Monial. There, in 1671, a young religious entered: Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque.

The apparitions
Precisely because she was a daughter of the Visitation, Margaret Mary was prepared to receive what would transform the life of the Church. The Lord showed her his pierced and burning Heart, lamented the indifference of men, and entrusted to her the mission of spreading this devotion, asking for the reparatory Communion of the First Fridays and a feast in his honor. The friendship of Francis and Jane had planted, without knowing it, the seed of Paray-le-Monial.

From Paray-le-Monial to the whole Church
Leo XIII consecrated the human race to the Sacred Heart in 1899 (Annum Sacrum), Pius XII set forth the richness of this devotion in Haurietis Aquas (1956), and Pope Francis devoted the whole of his encyclical Dilexit Nos (2024) to it. One single current of love, guarded by the Church across the centuries.

They are the words of a God who never tires of loving us. Between 1673 and 1675, Jesus opened his Heart to Saint Margaret Mary and confided, one after another, graces for all who would respond to his love with love.
I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.
I will establish peace in their homes.
I will comfort them in all their afflictions.
I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all, in death.
I will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings.
Sinners shall find in my Heart the source and the infinite ocean of mercy.
Lukewarm souls shall become fervent.
Fervent souls shall rise speedily to great perfection.
I will bless every place where an image of my Heart shall be exposed and honored.
I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.
Those who promote this devotion shall have their names written in my Heart, never to be effaced.

La Gran PromesaThe Great Promise
Nueve primeros viernes, nueve meses seguidosNine First Fridays, nine consecutive months
The Lord promises the grace of final perseverance to those who receive Communion on the First Fridays of nine consecutive months: they shall not die in his displeasure nor without their sacraments, and his Heart shall be their safe refuge in that last moment.
From this was born the devotion of the Nine First Fridays, received and approved by the Church. Pope Benedict XV included it in the bull of canonization of Saint Margaret Mary, in 1920.
Una invitación a confiarAn invitation to trust
More than a list to be fulfilled, these promises are an invitation to trust in the love of Jesus. The Lord does not expect from us a tally of merits, but a heart that draws near to him with sincere love. To that heart he promises the most beautiful thing of all: to be its secure refuge, today and always.
